Members of the EGP/Lit SIG volunteered on Fridays at the West Chester Public Library to set up for and oversee the 1-2-3 Play With Me sessions, which are held for local children younger than age 5. Members set up the area, play with the children, converse with the families, and clean up after the event.


Back to School Extravaganza

Student PSEA of WCU hosted an event at the Melton Center for the children of New Directions to get a good feeling about the start of the school year. The event consisted of four stations the children could go to: Mad Libs, How Many Drops on The Penny, Beat the Fidget Spinner, and Roll It and Write. There were also light refreshments for the children and volunteers to enjoy.



Friends Association Presentation on Homelessness and Volunteer Opportunities

Robin Meixner, Director of Programs, and Jill Laufenberg, Coordinator of Volunteers, came from the Friends Assocation to speak to PSEA members about youth homelessness and how PSEA members can volunteer with the Friends Association to combat this homelessness. Robin spoke about the Friends Association’s facilities (including the office and shelters for the families), services (assistance in obtaining legal paperwork and identification in order to apply for jobs), and programs with which PSEA can volunteer (weekly childcare and Fall Festival).

SPARC 5k

Members volunteered at a run and walk which helps raise money and awareness of a local organization, SPARC, which helps provide therapies and habilitation for children with Autism.

Members of PSEA volunteered for Alpha Upsilon Alpha’s “Fall into Literacy” Literacy Fair at Westtown-Thornbury Elementary. Members volunteered to create and oversee literacy stations. Some of these stations included Fly Swatter Fact or Opinion, Fall Cinquain Poems, and Rhyming Word Sort.



Fall Festival Preparation Meeting

Members met to finish preparing for the Friends Association Fall Festival. They assembled example crafts such as paper plate pumpkins, planned relay races, tested the “pumpkin guts” slime recipe, and counted our candy corn for the “How many candy corn are in the jar?” guessing game.


Friends Association Fall Festival

PSEA members volunteered to set up for, oversee, and clean up for the Friends Association Fall Festival. This event was a fall- and Halloween-themed party for families receiving services from the Friends Association. The children were able to pick out a costume, trick-or-treat, make crafts, play with slime, and participate in other fun games.




Church Street Fest: Rice Krispy Decorating

Student PSEA members ran a Rice Krispy decorating table at the 1st annual Church Street Fest at West Chester University. The event was for faculty, alumni, and their children and provided a fun and safe homecoming atmosphere. We provided Rice Krispy treats, icing, and sprinkles for the children to decorate for Halloween and Fall.




Special Olympics

Members cheered the teams on during the finals of the soccer games. We also danced with others for the players at half time.

Volunteers met to help SPSEA alumna Amanda Jeane Reichert in her fourth grade ELA classroom on Sunday’s. Volunteers decorated and organized Amanda’s classroom and also helped her grade assignments and test papers.




Night to Shine

Members were one-to-one buddies for the Tim Tebow Foundation’s Night to Shine event. This included being responsible for them throughout the evening and helping to meet their medical, sensory, and social needs while ensuring they had fun and were safe.



Read Across America Day

Members went to the WCADCC to read to the children for Read Across America Day. Members each went to different rooms and read to the kids there. At the end of the event, members gave the children each a book to take home.
